Royston Museum – Discover Over 2000 years of Royston’s story

Discover over 2000 years of Royston’s story… by Royston Museum

We’ve just launched our new exhibition, ‘Back to School’, exploring Royston’s schools throughout the 20th century.

Through objects, photographs and interviews with real students, find out what life was like for pupils at Queen’s Road School, Market Hill School and St Mary’s. Learn about their teachers, what pupils studied and what happened if they misbehaved! Open 23 March – 18 June 2023. Free entry.

To celebrate our new exhibition, on Saturday 15th April, we’re holding a back-to-school event! Join us for a day of school-themed arts and crafts. Make badges, split-pin paper dolls and bookmarks, and practise your handwriting on slate boards. With each activity, there’s a gold sticker to collect. Collect all your stickers to claim a free carton of milk or squash to enjoy! Sat 15 April, 10.00 am – 4.00 pm. £3 entry. Members free.

Behind the scenes, Phil Smith, who last month we shared had finished digitising the nearly 8000 photographs in our Photographic Collection, has now started digitising the documents in our Ephemera Collection. These includes old letters, bills, articles, leaflets and drawings. 1492 down, about 6000 more to go! Having been actively contributing to Royston’s history and museum for almost 60 years, last month Phil very deservedly won a Heritage Hero award which was presented by Hertfordshire Association of Museum’s at their annual awards evening.

Elsewhere, Royston Cave reopens on 1st April, with tickets already selling fast! Join us every weekend, from 1st April – 25th September, to discover one of Britain’s most unique mysteries. Online booking only.
