Why join a cycling club like the Royston Cycling Club?
Since the start of the pandemic, the number of men and women either taking up cycling for the first time or returning to it, as either a form of transport or exercise has increased significantly.Â
The Tour de France and the Tour de Femmes takes place this month (July) and this too may inspire a number of people to get out and ride more. For whatever reason, the good thing is that more people are riding their bikes.
For some, the thought of riding in a cycling club can be daunting but here is why you should consider joining.
Being part of the Royston Cycling Club will motivate you to ride more and encourage you to get the most out of your cycling as you will be with like-minded men and women.
You may also ride further than you thought possible on your own.
If you are new or returning to cycling, riding in a group will improve your confidence, visibility on the road and there will be friends with you should a mechanical issue or puncture occur to offer assistance and advice while on a ride.
We have several groups arranged by ability/average speed typically 14-16mph, 16-18mph and 18+mph and we have a “no one gets dropped“ philosophy, within the club.
So we are confident that whatever your average speed, we have a group that you can ride with.
You don’t have to join the club on the spot, we offer any potential new member the opportunity to ride with us on one or two of our rides first, without any pressure to commit.
We offer an easy going ride led by one of our more experienced riders covering 20-25 miles at an average of around 12mph, so if you feel comfortable covering this sort of distance in around two hours this is the ride for you. The ride is particularly suited to those wanting a relaxed introduction to group riding, lapsed cyclists returning to the saddle or indeed any rider wanting to enjoy an easy-paced and sociable ride around the local lanes.
We are not just all about a Sunday ride!
We generally stay for a coffee and a chat at The Old Bull Inn, Royston at the end of the ride.
There may be quiz nights, social evenings, presentation evenings, annual events, charity rides, group tours and holidays.
We have a club forum one advantage of this is that riders who can’t make a club ride can post a notice or request e.g. to ask if anyone would like to join them for a 20 mile ride tomorrow or whenever and usually a few will meet up. There will be many ad hoc rides as well as friendships that have resulted from group membership.
We meet every Sunday morning (weather permitting), setting off from Royston’s Market Hill car park at 9am.
You are welcome to come and cycle with us.
