Wellness Coaching: Jane Casey – Managing Comparison

Wellness Coaching: Jane Casey – Managing Comparison

President Theodore Roosevelt once said: ‘Comparison is the thief of joy’. When we ‘upwardly’ compare ourselves to others, we can make ourselves feel insignificant, insecure & dissatisfied.

Social media can make us feel we should be somewhere else, doing something else, with someone else. Upwardly comparing ourselves to others may determine our worth according to other people’s performance in life. Or rather, our perception of their performance and achievements.

But comparison can be positive if we use it as a driving force or source of inspiration, as long as we remember that our personal journey can’t be measured by the perceived success of others. It takes courage to live an authentic life with so many social pressures. Being yourself is the biggest and best gift you can offer yourself and others.

As Oscar Wilde said: ‘Be yourself, everyone else is already taken’.
