Spotlight On: Top of the Class Ten Years On Royston’s u3a celebrates a decade of success!

It’s a landmark moment for Royston’s University of the Third Age (u3a) as the organisation prepares to celebrate its 10th birthday – a decade that has seen it grow into one of the town’s most active and well-loved associations.

From its very first meeting in 2014, Royston u3a struck a chord with local residents. The group quickly gained momentum, attracting people keen to keep learning, stay active, and connect with others during the “third age” of life – that time after retirement or a reduction in work commitments when there’s more opportunity to pursue new interests. Today, the group boasts over 450 members, making it one of the largest and most vibrant community groups in Royston.

So, what’s the secret to its enduring appeal?

At its heart, Royston u3a is about friendship, shared learning, and community. Members are welcomed into a supportive, sociable environment, where they can take part in monthly meetings, social outings, and a wide variety of interest groups. These groups, led by members themselves, are central to the u3a ethos—people sharing their own knowledge and experiences with others in a relaxed and informal setting.

Whether it’s fitness, history, French conversation, walking, or wine appreciation, the diversity of subjects on offer reflects the richness of life experience among the membership. And the number of groups continues to grow, with new additions like line dancing already proving popular.

Reflecting on a decade of growth, Jackie Gellert, who has served as Chair since Royston u3a began, shared her thoughts on what has made the organisation such a success:

“It’s been an incredible journey. From small beginnings to the thriving u3a we are today, the friendships forged as well as the knowledge and fun we share—none of this would have been possible without your participation, enthusiasm, and support.”

She also paid particular tribute to the dedicated group leaders, many of whom volunteer their time and energy to organise sessions, lead activities, and encourage others to take part:

“Interest groups are the lifeblood of the organisation, and thanks go to our wonderful group leaders for giving members their time and effort.”

Over the past ten years, Royston u3a has become much more than a place to learn – it’s a space to connect, contribute, and feel part of something meaningful. For many, it has offered a sense of purpose, renewed confidence, and lifelong friendships.

With 25 interest groups currently running and more on the way, there’s truly something for everyone. And with new members always welcome, the group continues to thrive and evolve, just as it has done over the past decade.

As Royston u3a marks this special anniversary, there’s every reason to celebrate what has been achieved – and to look ahead to many more years of discovery, laughter, and community spirit.
