Community News: Experience Synaesthesia Through Art at Curwens Gallery This May

Curwens Solicitors Non-Profit Community Gallery and Claire Fremann from Libellule, Supporting Local Artists…

Visitors to Curwens Gallery this May are in for a sensory treat, as artist Bex Iles showcases her unique and thought-provoking exhibition of Synaesthesia-inspired artwork. The exhibition will be open to the public on Saturdays, 3rd, 10th, and 24th May, from 9am to 1pm.

Bex, a local artist living with Chromesthesia – a form of Synaesthesia where sound involuntarily evokes colour, shape, and movement – has been exploring this rare neurological phenomenon through her artwork for several years. Her pieces are visual interpretations of music, with each painting capturing the colours and patterns she experiences while listening. Each work can take up to four hours to complete, depending on the complexity and layers of the music.

Bex’s work has previously been displayed at The Hub at Melbourn (2023–24) and is currently available for purchase at Revolution Records in Royston, with commissions also available. Bex has also been invited to return to The Hub in April 2026 to showcase ten brand-new pieces.

In addition to Bex Iles’ captivating wall artwork for the main exhibition at the front of the gallery, visitors can also enjoy further down the gallery a wide range of beautifully crafted items by local makers and more local wall art from several artists. The collection includes original paintings (both framed and unframed), photography, fine art prints, greetings cards, lino prints, button art, woven goods and baskets, resin crafts and jewellery, metal sculpture, hand-painted glass vases, gold gilded items, and charming porcelain bunnies – with something to suit every taste and budget, from £2 to £200.

Be sure to explore the Wall Artists Display at the front of the gallery, featuring striking exhibitions on the main wall, alongside individual artist walls and a curated selection of unframed wall art available for browsing. A dedicated craft table is also coming soon, offering even more variety and inspiration.

Whether you’re looking for a unique gift or a special piece for your home, there’s plenty to discover – all while supporting our vibrant community of local creatives.

Claire, volunteer curator and organiser at the gallery, says:

“Please support and buy local. Arts and crafts are so good for your soul – acquiring one of these pieces creates positive ripples throughout our local communities. The gallery is only open to the public on Saturdays, an average of three per month, so please do come in on open Saturdays and help us keep creativity alive in Royston.”

The Curwens Gallery is now closed during the week and open to the public only on selected Saturdays.
