Restoring the Eastern Boundary of Therfield Heath

Work will soon begin on an important project to restore the eastern boundary of Therfield Heath, running along the Hertfordshire Way from the Golf Club, to help protect one of our most valuable local landscapes while improving its appearance and making it easier to care for in the future.

Over many years, this area has suffered from fly-tipping, garden waste dumping and the spread of dense scrub. These problems have damaged the character of the Heath and made it more difficult to manage this nationally important Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).

The project will focus on the section of the Hertfordshire Way between the Heath Avenue entrance and Footpath 10. Contractors will remove accumulated waste, including soil, building rubble and green waste, before clearing invasive scrub to restore the open grassland and scattered trees that are characteristic of the Heath.

Opening up the landscape will not only improve the appearance of the area but will also discourage future dumping by making the boundary more visible and easier to monitor and maintain.

The work is expected to take place between September 2026 and February 2027, with careful planning to minimise environmental impacts and comply with all agreed management requirements. The project has already secured external funding but with further funding being sought to extend the restoration further east towards Briary Lane in a future phase.

Residents living near the eastern boundary will receive information before work begins, and updates will also be shared through social media and on-site notices.

While there may be some short-term disruption during the works, the long-term benefits will be significant: a cleaner, healthier and more attractive boundary that better reflects the special nature of Therfield Heath and helps protect it for future generations.
