There’s something about yoga and autumn that just go really well together.
As the sun’s rays soften and the temperature cools, we naturally begin to turn inwards. The pace shifts, and so must we.
Sometimes, it only takes a gentle reminder to move more slowly, to breathe, to be still, to create the space you might be craving. This is when rolling out the yoga mat feels particularly nourishing.
Here are five things I love about yoga at this time of year.
1. Savasana feels even better
I can only describe Savasana as the ultimate state of being.
So still and quiet, yet alive with possibility. At peace and rested, yet fully aware and ready for the day or night. Completely present, but somehow lost in the moment.
And there is something about Savasana at this time of year that just hits differently, a returning to the earth like autumn leaves.
2. Restorative yoga comes into its own
Autumn invites us to soften. Restorative postures, slower movement and longer pauses can help us shift out of constant “doing” and into a state where the body can genuinely rest and restore.
3. The warmth
Being warm feels like a hug for my soul.
Our bodies respond well to yoga poses in the warmth too. Cosy socks, blankets, candlelight, a warm room… these little details matter. Creating warmth around us can help us feel safe enough to soften within.
4. Sound feels somehow deeper
Singing bowls, chimes, drums, chanting or simply the sound of your own breath. These are all rhythms that soothe the soul. When we become still enough to listen, sound can soothe the whole body.
5. We get to slow down
Perhaps this is my favourite. Autumn reminds us that slowing down isn’t the same as stopping. Nature doesn’t rush through the seasons, and neither do we need to.
So as October arrives, perhaps rather than fighting the darker evenings, we can lean into them. Roll out your mat. Breathe a little deeper. Move in a way that feels good. And discover just how lovely slowing down can feel.
