Mindful Living by Becky, Chanting Stork Yoga: November – Ancient Wisdom

Ancient Wisdom for a Modern Nervous System – When was the last time you did absolutely nothing?

Not scrolling through your phone, watching television or mentally planning tomorrow. Just sitting, breathing, being.

For something that sounds so simple, it can feel surprisingly difficult.

We live in a world that celebrates doing, achieving and keeping busy. But somewhere along the way, have we forgotten the art of simply being?

Thousands of years ago, ancient yogic philosophy offered a rather wonderful metaphor for the human experience.

In the Katha Upanishad, our body is described as a chariot, our senses as horses, our mind as the reins and our intellect as the charioteer.

Imagine those horses galloping in different directions, each drawn towards something new. Sound familiar?

Our modern world provides endless distractions. Notifications, responsibilities, information and expectations, all competing for our attention. And without awareness, it’s easy to find ourselves being carried along for the ride.

But the wisdom of this ancient story isn’t about stopping the horses. It’s about learning to guide them so we can enjoy the view.

What if the secret isn’t slowing life down, but learning to be more present for the ride?

This is where yoga becomes so much more than physical movement. Through conscious breathing, mindful movement and meditation, we practise steadying our senses, bringing awareness to our thoughts and creating space between what happens around us and how we respond.

Not to escape life, but to experience it more fully.

Perhaps that’s the real magic of yoga. It helps us take hold of the reins, choose our direction and become active participants in our own lives, rather than simply being carried along by them.

If you’re curious to discover how yoga can help you feel fitter, calmer and more present in everyday life, I’d love to welcome you to one of my weekly classes.
