Mayhem hits Bassingbourn…
Bassingbourn was engulfed in Mayhem on the weekend of 27th & 28th May, when the annual village event returned to entertain the locals. A long convoy of varied designs of vintage tractors toured the streets of the community before leading the way to Nigel Howard’s Field of Dreams. Nigel kindly allows its use for the charitable activities each year. The crowds flocked in to enjoy the host of family orientated entertainment lined up for them including Jane Drinkwater’s admirably presented dog show, bringing together a wide cross section of breeds and temperaments. There was a mini fun fair for the children, side shows, market stalls, and the big attraction for the afternoon, a Music Festival in the form of bands and vocalists, all of whom performed free of charge. The local Bassingbourn Village Band, itself a charity, opened the concert. There followed show stopping lyrics from Molly, Dylan and the Dynamites pop rock, punk renderings from Wolf Pack, with the finale a Queen Tribute Band, culminating at 10pm.
Street Food and refreshments in the form of delicious homemade cakes and beverages were in abundance, all complemented by a well stocked licensed bar.
The happening is just one of the numerous ongoing events in the village which raise funds for Cancer Research, Leukaemia UK, Addenbrookes Trust, and many other worthy causes.
Since the last Mayhem the group has supported the local library, the Bassingbourn over 60s, and a host of other local organisations, donating a total of £2,400.
The Mayhem is the brainchild of Tom Marriage who has been organising the event for twelve years. “I have enjoyed every minute of it”, he said, “but this will be my last one. I need a rest and I am hoping that someone else will now take the reins.”
Secretary, Sophie Marriage, described the day as fabulous and sent a big thank you to everyone that had made the day possible. She stated that “The committee intends to publish full details of the total raised as soon as possible”.
