Escape to The City

Escape to The City – Regent’s Canel

Originally built to link the Grand Junction Canal’s Paddington branch with the River Thames, Regent’s Canal now offers a quiet and atmospheric day out. It is a place of leisure for Londoners and visitors alike.

The canal snakes eight scenic miles through London, however, my favourite way to explore the canal is a short, two-mile walk from Camden to Little Venice.

Start your day by taking the tube to Camden Town. Camden is a weird and wonderful part of London; it is truly a unique place and full of character. Spend an hour here engaging with quirky market stalls, indulging in world class food offerings, and admiring the buskers on the streets. You could also pick up some snacks for the day ahead. My favourite is Café de Nata which sells delicious Portuguese pastries.

When you are ready to move on, head down to Regent’s Canal. Begin the walk by heading westwards out of Camden, following the towpath. As the path turns out of Camden, you’ll pass an assortment of houses, from Victorian-style homes to modernist townhouses. The canal leads from Camden into Regent’s Park, passing London Zoo before skirting round Lord’s Cricket Ground and St. John’s Wood, then continuing towards Paddington.

The pool of Little Venice, also known as Browning’s Pool, makes a great place to end the walk. This slice of Venetian heaven is nestled between the Grand Union Canal and Regent’s Canal and is lined with boats and Georgian houses.

Sit on the bank and enjoy your snacks while taking in the views.

To make a full day of it, take a stop at Primrose Hill and admire the view over the city, or have a wander round Regent’s Park.
