SEN Lego Club

Royston SEN lego group opened in November last year. The new group is for children with any additional needs or disabilities such as (autistic spectrum condition or ADHD) and their families including their siblings.

The group is run and was set up by volunteers including parents and people that work with children who have additional needs. The group received lots of donations from local people to help it get  up and running. And have just received the news that they have been awarded a grant from the national lottery so the group can continue to operate free of charge.

The families gather at Coombes Community Centre on the first Saturday of the month from 2-4 pm, whilst the children create their Lego masterpieces and make friends with other children like them, it’s also chance for the parents to meet have a cuppa and support one another in a totally non judgemental atmosphere.

We are also extremely lucky to receive some visits from Baiba the pets as therapy dog who helps so many of the children to  feel calm and lowers their anxiety throughout the session.

One parent, Jo, said: ‘It is great to be able to attend something with people in the same situation as us. At the beginning it feels like you are alone when you get the diagnosis but it’s good to know there are other people out there that are willing to listen to your problems.’

‘I’ve never seen this much lego in my life. This is the Lego club of my dreams’ says one of the young members. Another young member, Samuel, said ‘I wouldn’t know what to do if I didn’t have Lego club.’
