Hockey was first played on Therfield Heath in 1957 and although Royston Hockey club currently play home games in Cambridge we have moved our clubhouse base to Royston Golf club and continue to thrive with five senior teams. Three Men’s and two Ladies teams play competitive Hockey in the East Leagues. The big plan is still to build or play on a suitable Astroturf surface in Royston.
After the huge fright in 2012 when the MOD announced the closure of Bassingbourn Barracks the senior teams have played at St. Edmund’s College near Puckeridge, St. Ernulf School in St. Neots some 19 miles away and, for the last four years, St. Catherine’s College, Cambridge. Maybe there is another Saint out there who can help us build in Royston!
With a thriving and growing junior section of 150, and over 75 adult players coupled with active Vice Presidents and Supporters we have nearly 300 members. We now need more space for our junior section who train over three sessions on Sunday mornings at Meridian School and our coach has done a fantastic job keeping them motivated and involved. This coming season started on September 15th and the juniors will be playing against other clubs at all age groups to keep the momentum going as we continue our focus on youth development.Â
It was only in 2014 after the 2012 Olympic success that as a club we decided to expand and focus on Junior Development yet we still look to recruit new players from both senior and junior levels. We started discussions with parents and helpers to run a separate junior committee and it is now a self financed club within Royston Hockey Club and is a credit to the managing team.
We have a great team behind the scenes who work tirelessly to keep us going and moving forward. They know who they are and I thank them, it makes my life easy due to their commitment.
