Out and About… 398th Bombardment Group (Heavy) 80th Anniversary

This year marks not only the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings but also a more local anniversary, the anniversary of the arrival of the 398th Bombardment Group (Heavy) in Nuthampstead, North Hertfordshire.

Families, friends and supporters of the squadrons who were based at Nuthampstead have returned year upon year to show their respect, but in May, the volunteers of the Nuthampstead Airfield Museum are hosting a special event to pay respect to the airmen, but also to raise much needed funds for the upkeep of the museum and preservation of the artifacts housed therein.

During World War II, the 398th Bomb Group operated B-17 Flying Fortresses from their base in Nuthampstead, Hertfordshire, conducting strategic bombing missions over Germany. Transitioning their efforts prior to D-Day, they redirected their attention to enemy positions along the Cherbourg peninsula. As the Allies established a stronghold in Europe, the group shifted towards tactical missions, aiding ground forces by disrupting enemy supply lines. Following the war, the group played a vital role in transporting prisoners of war from Germany to France.

The Nuthampstead Airfield Museum, located behind The Woodman Inn in Nuthampstead, is run by enthusiasts, but also by family of those who were once stationed here. They have created a day of events to showcase the history of the airfield. All those who wish to pay their respects are invited to attend an official service at the memorial at 11am on Saturday 25th of May.

In the evening the museum is hosting a 1940’s style dance with a live performance by Miss Jones Jazz Band. Tickets include a buffet and a charitable donation to the museum. Tickets are limited, so book soon!
