Written by Ryan, on behalf of Royston Scaffolding
Following our article on Royston’s blue plaques last month, we’re publishing a selection of plaques in each issue. For June, we focus on:
Priory Memorial Gardens
Design Award Winner: Festival of Britain, 1951 – Arthur W Whydale, Architect
Priory Gates
17th Century wrought iron gates once stood at the entrance to the Pickering Mansion in Whaddon, and later at the Gables in Baldock Street
The Market Hill Rooms
Erected in 1840 as the British School for Children of Nonconformist Families
You can read a detailed history behind each of the blue plaques in F John Smith’s book “The Blue Plaques of Royston”, published by Royston and District Local History Society, which is available to borrow from Royston Library.
With thanks to Ryan’s research.
