Business Profile: Royston Vets – Fly Strike
Fly Strike can happen in a matter of hours and can quickly lead to toxic shock and death. Pets with dirty rear ends or generally dirty fur are particularly at risk of Fly Strike.
This may happen in animals that are unable to clean themselves properly, animals that are ill and may produce smelly urine or have diarrhoea, are fed the wrong food, have an internal parasitic infection or have open wound(s).
Some of the things you can do to help prevent Fly Strike include: Daily health checks. If your pet’s back end is dirty, clean it immediately with warm water and ensure the area is dried thoroughly. Clean toilet areas every day and change bedding at least once a week. Neuter female rabbits, as unneutered females may be more prone to Fly Strike.
