Royston and District Probus Club offers retired and semi-retired professional and business people the chance to make new friends, enjoy good conversation and discover new places together.
The club meets on the second Thursday of each month at Royston Golf Club for a drink, lunch and plenty of conversation.
Every other meeting also features a guest speaker, with recent subjects ranging from Royston’s history and the Sikh religion to Men’s Sheds and Lasting Powers of Attorney.
Regular days out are another popular part of club life. This year members have visited Big Ben, the British Library, Brighton, St Paul’s Cathedral, the Mail Rail and Globe Theatre.
Their latest adventure took seven members and four partners to the V&A East Storehouse in London. This fascinating new museum gives visitors a behind-the-scenes look at more than 250,000 objects from the V&A collections, including a complete Frank Lloyd Wright interior.
After exploring the museum, the group walked along the River Lee Navigation to Barge East, a 122-year-old Dutch barge, for an early evening meal, followed by a final stop in Hackney Wick before heading home to Royston.
With members from a wide range of backgrounds, Probus is as much about friendship and conversation as its meetings, speakers and outings – and new members are very welcome.
