Royston Radio joined the community at Royston Parish Church to celebrate an extraordinary piece of the town’s history
Royston Radio was delighted to be at Royston Parish Church during Heritage Open Days, where the magnificent Royston Tapestry was displayed in all its glory.
Measuring approximately 85 feet long, the tapestry depicts many significant scenes from Royston’s history and offers a fascinating visual journey through the people, places and events that have shaped the town.
The tapestry itself is an incredible community achievement. Beginning as a concept in 1992, it was lovingly created by local volunteers over more than 20 years, with work continuing until 2013.
During the event, Royston Radio caught up with Martin and Carole Kaszak, Sophie from Royston Museum and Vicar Steven Sivyer, hearing more about the tapestry, the stories behind it and the importance of preserving and sharing Royston’s heritage.
Seeing the complete tapestry on display provided a wonderful opportunity for visitors to appreciate both its scale and extraordinary detail, while celebrating the dedication of the many local people involved in its creation.
Heritage Open Days once again provided a fantastic opportunity to discover more about the history on our doorstep, and the Royston Tapestry is a wonderful reminder of what can be achieved when a community comes together.
