Royston drama group CADS is about to unleash its latest (and possibly silliest) show – a production of Mark Evans’s hilarious Bleak Expectations. Originally an award-winning Radio 4 comedy series, it’s a surreal parody of the works of Charles Dickens, as well as other adventure and costume dramas set in the same period.
The play is a gloriously daft romp that follows the extraordinary exploits of half-orphan Pip Bin with sisters Pippa and Poppy and best friend Harry Biscuit as they attempt to escape the calculating clutches of the dastardly Mr Gently Benevolent, defeat the hideous Hardthrasher siblings, and deflect disaster at every turn. It’s a hilarious, chaotic caper, featuring dastardly villains, preposterous names, pulse-quickening romances, heart-rending death scenes, and definitely… probably… hopefully a happy ending.
The script proved really popular at the first of the group’s revived play readings last May, and Kathy Young and David Atkins subsequently agreed to co-direct it for CADS.
Performances will be at 7.30pm at King James Academy (Senior Site) on Thursday 4th, Friday 5th and Saturday 6th June.
Tickets are £15 each and you can book online via the link on the CADS website or by phone on 07856 599 039. Seat numbers are slightly more limited than usual so it’s advisable to book early.
