South Farm – A Relaxed Wedding Venue in the Heart of the Cambridgeshire Countryside
We were delighted to be invited to South Farm’s press day to see for ourselves the newly opened Apple Shed, a beautifully designed pre-wedding space for the bridal party.
For those who don’t know it, South Farm is an award-winning, family-run wedding venue in Shingay-cum-Wendy, just eight miles from Royston. Set within 20 acres of Cambridgeshire countryside, it combines a romantic setting with exceptional service and a genuine commitment to sustainability.
During our visit, we were treated to a guided walk through the farm’s smallholding, discovering beds and polytunnels filled with seasonal produce that goes into the menus for guests. In fact, 60–70% of the food served at South Farm is grown on the farm, making this a true farm-to-fork experience. In July, fresh tomatoes of every variety, garlic, onions and courgettes were growing in abundance
And this really is a working farm. Alongside the kitchen gardens are kunekune pigs, miniature donkeys and pygmy goats, while a wander around the farm makes a lovely escape from the formalities of a long wedding celebration.
We were particularly impressed by the grounds, from the formal gardens with summerhouse, outdoor bar and ponds, to the pollinator-friendly wildflower meadow and orchard, home to heritage varieties of apples, pears, plums, cherries, quince and medlar. Sustainability isn’t simply something South Farm talks about – it’s the core of how the farm operates.
The venue itself is equally impressive, with five licensed ceremony spaces offering both indoor and outdoor options for celebrations ranging from 20 to 200 guests. There’s accommodation on site too, including five beautifully appointed rooms and suites and five charming Romany caravans. We also loved that guests can camp on site, with nearby bed and breakfast accommodation providing further options.
And then there’s the Apple Shed, South Farm’s newest addition. An intimate and relaxed pre-wedding space, it gives the bridal party and their families somewhere to prepare and enjoy those precious hours before the ceremony. The light-filled room has four hair and make-up stations, a comfortable lounge and well-appointed kitchen, while its own enclosed garden provides a peaceful spot for those first photographs and quiet moments before the celebrations begin.
What we can’t quite capture here is the atmosphere. South Farm manages to feel relaxed and understated while still offering a real sense of luxury, with an attentive team on hand to make sure everything runs smoothly.
