News from our Clubs: Royston & District Probus

PROBUS (PROfessional and BUSiness) is a local, national, and international association of retirees who come together in non-political, non-sectarian, non-profit, autonomous clubs which provide regular opportunities for members to meet others in similar circumstances, with similar levels of interest, make new friends, and maintain and expand their interests.

Royston and District Probus Club meets once a month on the second Thursday of every month at Royston Golf Club to enjoy a drink, lunch and convivial conversation. Every second meeting is a Speaker Meeting to which a speaker is invited to talk about their topic after lunch.

At the monthly luncheon meeting on 8th August at Royston Golf Club 23 members attended and enjoyed a 2-course meal followed by a talk entitled ‘LPAs made simple’ by Gaye Illsley.

During the talk members heard about how important it is to ensure a Lasting Power of Attorney is in place before it’s too late and the difficulties your family may be faced with. The difference between the earlier Enduring Power of Attorney (EPA) and LPA and why it is recommended to update to the latter was also explained.

A group of eleven visited the Mansion House in the heart of the City of London in July and enjoyed a guided tour of the house built in 1527. It was, and still is, the home and office of The Lord Mayor of London and is currently a busy working office that provides a spectacular setting for business meetings, civic and livery activity and conferences.

Days Out are organised too during the year and visits so far have been to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, BT Adastral Park Robotics and Drone Lab. The next planned visit is to Holborn Underground Station where we will be guided into the disused areas that are not seen by the public.

Two new members have been welcomed since June so there are now 32 members currently, some of whom meet regularly at other times for social meetings and to attend sporting events.

The next regular luncheon is planned for Thursday 12th September. Retirees, or those almost retired, who would like to maintain social activities having found that they miss the day-to-day associations with colleagues would be welcome.
