Community News: Bee Friendly – ‘Be Part of It’

John O’Connor Pest Control and Grounds Maintenance, in conjunction with North Herts Council, are working towards a Bee Friendly Status for Royston, following their successful initiative in Letchworth.

An application is underway to submit Royston’s Bee Corridor for a Bee Friendly Award, with judging due to take place in April/May this year.
The “Bee Part Of It” community event takes place in Priory Memorial Gardens, Royston, on Saturday 29th March from 10am to 2pm.

Activities include:
• Face Painting
• Arts and crafts
• Bee Friendly Products
• Local Bee Keepers
• Making Bee Seed Bombs
• Constructing Bug Hotels
• Culture Wood
• Wildlife Trust
• Refreshments
• Throwing Seed Bombs

The main community event will take place at 1pm when Royston residents will throw seed bombs (with additional colour) into a specified area, where the seeds will grow into a patch of wildflowers for bees to enjoy!

Residents, businesses, schools, and community groups in Royston can get involved by growing bee-friendly plants in their gardens or introducing pots or planters of nectar-rich flowers. If you already have a bee-friendly garden in Royston, then please get in touch with the Bee Part of It team.

Emma Pritchard, from the Bee Friendly Trust, explains the importance of the project, “It is well known that bee populations are struggling, with many species at risk of extinction. A third of the food we eat depends on bees; bees help to reduce pollution, and they are key players in the fight against climate change.

“The Bee Friendly Awards celebrate groups that are championing bees and pollinators. Transforming a turfed village green into a wildflower meadow, creating raised beds packed with pollinator-friendly flowers in school playgrounds, or building and installing bee and bug hotels are all habitat-forming initiatives that make positive change happen.”
