The Friends activities include popular wildlife talks, en Plein Air Art, Swift walks, and Yoga on the Heath.
At the AGM in July, Bryony May was re-elected as chair for a further year (Bryony’s final term at her request), Ray Munden was re-elected Treasurer, Ann Smith stepped down as Secretary and Melanie Pluck was elected. Sarah Ramsey and Ann Smith were re-elected to the Committee. The accounts were publicised, with the Treasurer’s comment that funds are committed to some large forthcoming projects.
The Friends began an exciting partnership with Nature Nell and Dr Dell CIC in July. The first joint event, a Biofluorescence and Bat Detection Walk, was attended by 12 people. The group was introduced to the science of waves and different wavelengths, then the adventure began using torches, binoculars and bat detectors. The biofluorescence torches highlighted amazing colours in the flowers, grasses and lichen. The bat detectors picked up the exciting sounds of common pipistrelle and nocturne bats. The group agreed that it was a fun and informative evening.
On 12th August, the best solar eclipse from the UK since 1999 occurred with perfect sky conditions. Hundreds of people congregated on the Heath to experience the event on a warm summer evening. Experts from Letchworth and District Astronomy Society were there to witness the event, with safe viewing and expert explanations.
Litter Picks on the Heath continue on the second Sunday of every month, and more volunteers are sought.
