Community News: The Friends of Therfield Heath – Swift Walk & Nesting Boxes

The Friends of Therfield Heath and Greens (FOTH) are continuing to erect Swift nest boxes in and around Royston, and to date, over 100 have been installed.

Having travelled to Europe this summer, it is a joy to see the skies full of swifts, and it does remind us of just how many we used to see here filling the skies over Royston too.

The Swift population in the UK has declined by more than 60% over the past 25 years. One major contribution to this decline is thought to be due to lack of nesting sites as we ‘tidy up’ our buildings. Boxes cost £20 each and fitting £20/box. Please note that Swifts do not make a mess under their nests.

If you are interested please email FOTH at friendsoftherfieldheath@gmail.com

Peter Tiffin of the Bassingbourn Swift Group will be joining the Friends of Therfield Heath to lead a Swift walk around Royston on Thursday 9th July.

If you’d like to join, meet at 7.30pm at the Town Hall car park. The walk will then view some of the Swift boxes in Royston, including those known to be used. Peter will also share some interesting facts about Swifts. No need to book, it’s free, just turn up. In particular anyone interested in forming a Royston Swift Group would be welcome. Swift Walk, Thursday 9th July, 7.30pm
