People from Royston and the surrounding villages have joined together in an amazing act of generosity to raise a record £4,500 for the charity Children in Need.
The money was contributed to a collection held by the Royston Rotary Club (with help from Pudsey Bear) over two days at the town’s Tesco store.
The principal organiser, Rotarian David Beardwell, said: “It says so much for the people of our town at a time when so many are grappling with multiple and sustained attacks on their family budgets. Well done Royston! Many thanks, too, to Tesco who provided a perfect venue for this event. Long may it continue…
“The exact figure was a staggering £4,458.50, raised over Friday and Saturday. Both days were very similar, Friday £2,320.84 and Saturday £2,137.66.”
BBC Children in Need believes that “every child should have the chance to thrive and be the best they can be. ”
It pledges: “We are committed to being there for children across the UK when they need us the most. Together with the BBC and our partners, we inspire the nation to support this work.” This year the charity has raised at least £33.5 million, with the final figure still to be announced.
