Music lovers and organ enthusiasts have reason to celebrate as the historic organ at St Andrew’s Church, Orwell, has been fully rebuilt and restored to its former glory. Dating back to 1878, this remarkable instrument now features modern enhancements, allowing its 1,000 pipes, 24 stops, two keyboards, and pedalboard to reach their full potential.
The extensive restoration was carried out by Cousans Organ Builders in Coalville, Leicestershire. Over eight months of meticulous craftsmanship, the organ was dismantled, rebuilt with new parts, and reassembled, ensuring its longevity and enhanced performance for future generations.
To commemorate its return, renowned organist Paul Hale will perform at a special celebration concert on 9th May at St Andrew’s Church. This highly anticipated event will showcase the organ’s renewed capabilities and its vast range of sounds, covering the full spectrum of human audibility.
Beyond the concert, St Andrew’s Church is inviting the community to take part in “Play the Organ Year 2025.” This initiative will offer opportunities throughout the summer for anyone interested to try playing the organ and discover what a thrill it is to play the organ firsthand.
This restoration marks an exciting moment for the local community, preserving a vital piece of musical and cultural heritage. Whether attending the concert or participating in “Play the Organ Year,” residents and visitors alike can look forward to a unique musical experience in Orwell.
