Julian’s April Business Tips: Sport or Business

It’s great to read all the sporting stories in this month’s magazine – I always find them inspiring!

Despite never having run a step until I was 49, later this month I shall be up on the North Yorkshire coast, running 26 miles along the coast path from Redcar down to Whitby!
But why? That’s the question I get asked most, ‘Running a marathon? Whatever for?’
So today, let me answer that question – and you may be surprised how many similarities there are between wanting to run a marathon, and wanting to run a business!
You like a challenge
• Running a marathon and running a business are both difficult: you need to be up for the challenge to try either of them!
• Some challenges are physical, but often the biggest challenges are mental – overcoming self-doubt and the negative thoughts in your head.

Lots of choice
• Just as there are thousands of different types of businesses, there are also thousands of different runs or sporting events you can enter. Find one that inspires you and go for it!

You enjoy the process
• We often start a business because we enjoy doing the thing that our business does. And for me, the running helps me explore new areas of the UK and learn about them for the YouTube videos I create!

The benefits are in the future
• Both allow you to take responsibility for your future. Having your own business brings a level of financial and personal freedom for you and your family, whilst running and sport have a range of social, mental and physical health benefits too.

However you are spending your April, I wish you all health and happiness. Alongside my running, I will be enjoying the wares of the chocolate-making business!
Happy Easter!
