Business Profile: Royston Vets – Anxiety in Pets

News from Royston Vets – Anxiety in Pets

Our pets can experience feelings of anxiety and stress, it’s commonly misunderstood and people fail to realise it’s an issue before it becomes out of hand. Common signs that we see are changes in behaviour and posture, panting, lip licking and pacing. These quite often develop into more serious signs for example, self-inflicted trauma and household destruction.

It’s important to recognise these early and seek advice before they develop. The cause of their anxiety can differ and very much depends on your pet as an individual, some will experience stress when subject to a change in routine, others will be reactive to loud noises, like fireworks. In a lot of cases, a combination or training like desensitisation and counterconditioning along with supplements can be beneficial, but in more severe cases medicinal intervention may be required.
