Community News: The Friends of Therfield Heath – July Update

Where the money goes…

The Friends raise money throughout the year at different events. The aim is for people to enjoy this special open space, learn something new about it throughout the seasons and contribute to equipment and facilities through raising funds.

The Great Mulch Giveaway sessions have been so successful that the Friends can now contribute to the hire cost of the chipper from the donations made by those collecting mulch. It is a win-win situation with the Heath mulch now spread locally in gardens and allotments, rather than the unwanted wood and prunings being burnt.

We have also funded five hand mattocks and two more tree poppers, which are used by Ellie, the Ranger, and her band of dedicated volunteers who help to maintain the heath. There were 3 more Great Mulch Giveaways in June which added to the funds. The Heath does not receive any government funding. Income is raised by the rents and fees from businesses and organisations using the Heath for commercial purposes. The Friends fundraising goes towards providing those added extras.

In the coming months there are wildlife talks, monthly litter picks and another Yoga session. We also support other local initiatives like the campaign for homes for Swifts. 100 boxes have been put up in the Royston area this year. Did you see our stand at the Green Festival in June?

Help us support Therfield Heath by becoming more involved and helping at Friends events or becoming a committee member to plan and organise activities.

After 4 years, the current Secretary is stepping down at the AGM on 21st July and we need someone to replace them and join the enthusiastic, friendly committee to help meet the charitable aims.
