Royston Cave March Highlights: John Ambler – 3D Gaussian Splattering

Last month we had the pleasure of welcoming John Ambler to the cave. He very generously performed scans of the cave by using 3D Gaussian splattering.

This is a rendering technique that represents a scene as thousands or millions of tiny 3D Gaussian blobs, which can be projected and blended extremely quickly to create smooth, high‑quality images.

When combined with LiDAR, these Gaussians can be anchored to precise depth measurements, allowing fast, accurate reconstruction of real‑world environments from sparse point clouds.

We may not understand the science, but we certainly loved the images created!
