Royston Photographic Society are pleased to present the profile of one of our founder members, Pat Flicker.
The club was formed in 1988. Pat was there at the first meeting and is still a regular at our weekly meetings – contributing across all aspects of club life, offering advice from a depth of knowledge, as well as adding to his own knowledge. Pat has always been a great club supporter, filling the role of Treasurer for over 30 years. Over his period of membership Pat has collected many items of memorabilia from out club including pictures of events and members, newsletters and newspaper cuttings. Without ever intending it, Pat has become the club archivist often raising surprised looks when we see how cameras, styles and hairlines have changed.
His love of photography began during his army service, where Pat vividly remembers hanging out of helicopters in the Far East to take dynamic views of the countryside. Today his photography is not so adrenalin filled but does encompass most aspects of club photography with a special interest in wildlife, particularly birds. Pat’s favourite bird to photograph is the elusive Kingfisher,where his fieldcraft and reactions need to be at their best.
Club trips are a favourite of Pat’s where he makes every effort to attend, spending time with fellow enthusiasts across the length and breadth of the country. In addition to photography, Pat also values the friendships he has made in the club. He has an active social circle of current members with many others who have moved on but still stay in touch. Pat feels that this is reflective of the club as a whole which has always been based on the social aspects of club life rather than competition.
Although Pat prioritises the social aspects of club life, he does join competition events each month and has had his pictures awarded in national events as well as East Anglia Championships.
Pat is keen to add to his profile notes that our club still welcomes new members, with an open invite to 3 meetings as a ‘taster’ session.
