Club News: Royston Photographic Society: Martin Johnson

Royston Photographic Society are delighted to present a series of photographer profiles to feature in The Listing.

Our aim is to provide readers with a flavour of the pictures produced by members and provide inspiration to local photographers. The second member into the spotlight is Martin Johnson.

The photographers in Royston Photographic Society have arrived at their common hobby from a whole variety of directions. For many photography grew as a hobby and then developed into a preferred specialism. Others already had a driving passion for a different hobby, then found photography fitted ideally with that. One such photographer is Martin Johnson.

Martin has had a dominant lifelong interest in natural history, so he has naturally gravitated towards photographing wildlife, in particular insects and birds. He can often be found on Therfield Heath during the summer months, perhaps lying on the ground as he tries to get close to its special butterflies and other small insects. His butterfly images have been printed in national magazines and he has recently been awarded a ‘highly commended’ ribbon in the national PAGB (Photographic Alliance of Great Britain) natural history competition. He is a licentiate of the Royal Photographic Society.

Club nights at Royston have given him the opportunity to broaden his photographic horizons through competing in internal and external competitions, as well as the chance to learn from members whose interests lie in other areas, such as landscape and street photography. However, he gets most enjoyment from the relaxed, friendly atmosphere of these club nights and the social events run by the club.

Luckily for the club, given Martins tremendous wildlife skills, Martin is a great contributor to the clubs training events. He generously shares skills and information to all those wanting to develop.

We hope that Andrew’s pictures provide enjoyment to readers. For anyone wishing to experience camera club life and would like to follow in Martin’s footsteps.
