You can’t go wrong with The Chequers Thai in Royston, the town’s newest restaurant, which offers authentic and delicious Thai food.
We visited earlier in the summer, and were really impressed with the refurbishment. It’s stylish and modern, whilst retaining the historic features of the listed building. The ambience is smart, stylish restaurant, with excellent service, and that it is walking distance from where we live is a big, big plus. For those travelling, there’s ample parking in the car park, across the road from the bus stop or a 10/15minute walk to and from the train station.
Of course, as well as a comfortable atmosphere, the biggest judge of all is the food…
On our first visit, we enjoyed a cashew nut chicken stir fry, packed full with fresh vegetables, and very tasty. Friends rated the pad thai as excellent, and the black bean stir fry was a big hit too. Thai curries are our real foodie love, with Beef Massaman an absolute favourite. So on a second visit, we ordered this and were not left disappointed: a rich sauce and succulent, melt in the mouth beef. Just perfect. Again, friends were equally impressed with their green and red curries.
One of our party is not a ‘spicy’ food fan, but the staff were really accommodating and friends had previously recommended the crispy duck which is a must for all duck lovers, and also chicken pad-thai and the yellow curry which was just delightful – you’ll have to give it a try and let us know what you think!
The Chequers has been open for a few months now, and as well as the A La Carte menu, which is available every Monday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, they offer a set-price Wednesday Banquet Menu, where you choose your three dishes from 45 on the menu, for £16.95 per head; and a Sunday “As Much As You Can Eat” Buffet with a wide array of dishes for £22.95 per person. We’ve not tried either of those yet, but now that the Autumn nights are starting to draw in, we know that The Chequers Royston is on our “must-visit” list this year!
