Out and About… Armistice Day and Remembrance Sunday 2023
As you read this article, Armistice Day and Remembrance Sunday will be but days away; this year Armistice Day falls on Saturday 11th November, followed by Remembrance Sunday, the following day, on Sunday 12th November.
Our town like many other towns, cities and villages across the country will gather to remember those who have died in service to their country. This year sees the 70th anniversary of the end of the Korean War (1950 -1953), in which Britain, amongst other nations took part; it is often referred to as the ‘Forgotten War’.
This year also sees the 60th anniversary of the last serviceman to be demobbed from National Service; between 1947 and 1963 more than 2 million men were conscripted into service, they served in the Army, Navy, and Royal Air Force, many serving in combat operations such as the Korean War, Malayan Emergency, and the Suez Crises.
As we remember all those who have died in service to their country, let us also remember all those whose service in protecting our freedoms and way of life has come at a cost to their physical, mental and emotional wellbeing; for many every day is Remembrance Day; LEST WE FORGET.
In closing, I would like to mention the Remembrance Sunday Parade and Service; many months of preparation and planning goes into organising the day, as well as a significant financial cost. The service at the war memorial is well attended, but the parade element could do with more support. You do not have to have served to come and join the parade!
If you would like to take part in the parade, please arrive at the forming up point in Queens Road, Royston by 10:00hrs on Sunday 12th November.
