Royston Cave 2022: A Year of Discovery
Royston Cave is now open! Every Saturday, Sunday and Bank Holiday from 2nd April – 25th September, join us deep underground for guided tours of the cave. Book now to discover the stories of its carvings and unearth the mysteries of its past.
What else is happening? Well, on 9th April, we’ll be marking the dissolution of Royston’s Priory with our most extensive article yet. From its origin as a chapel to its expansion into a monastery and later adaption into a parish church, learn about the lives of the monks who lived there and the important role the priory played though Royston’s history. Accompanied by beautiful drawings and floor plans, the article will be available to view in our online archive; roystoncave.co.uk/archive.
And the fun doesn’t stop there! Later this month, on 22nd April, we’re celebrating Earth Day with the release of our first ever geology report.
Researched and written by specialists from Hertfordshire Geological Society, the report will be based on analysis of small samples of chalk, which were extracted from the cave walls, and will determine the geology of the bedrock in which Royston Cave sits! It will identify the chalk’s age, fossil content and provenance, so we can discover whether the chalk beneath Royston is in its original location or was moved here by glaciers millions of years ago! You can get involved too with a series of scientific experiments and activities that will be freely available to download from our website. Sweet!
