Royston can trace its origins to the 12th century and an Augustine Priory, a mysterious medieval cave, two ancient thoroughfares and a royal palace have shaped the town that we know today.
The cave remains, as do the thoroughfares in the shape of the A10 and the A505 and although all that remains of the Priory is the Church of St. John the Baptist, the attractive Priory Gardens remind us of the past. This beautifully kept open space with its magnificent Ilex Oak tree, sensory maze, play areas and sports courts will be further enhanced next year when a Splash Park is constructed.
During the summer months you can visit the cave and see the remarkable carvings in low relief that grace the bell shape chamber. Despite much speculation since the cave was rediscovered in 1742 its origins are still shrouded in mystery. Royston Library has a number of books on the subject if you want to make up your own mind!
More of the town’s rich history will be revealed if you follow the Town Trail – who knew that Royston was the home of Lord Mounteagle in 1605 who passed information to the King ensuring the Gunpowder Plot was foiled? Pick up your copy from the new Royston Information Centre in Royston Library and enjoy an educational stroll for an hour or so.
Royston residents are truly blessed to have the wide open space of the heath to enjoy. The Golf Club has its home here and its members enjoy their games in beautiful surroundings with historic and botanical significance. Sheep graze the slopes, racehorses are put through their paces on the gallops and may sports clubs as well as a gym are based here. The Sports club offers refreshments and it is a delight to sit and enjoy the scenery.
Culturally and socially there is plenty to enjoy here. Royston boasts over 300 different clubs and societies, a diverse and well attended annual Arts Festival and a unique and interesting museum with a full timetable of events throughout the year.
