Therfield Sports Pavilion Opening Ceremony

Following an eight month project to update, refurbish and extend the Sports Pavilion at Therfield Recreation Ground; Therfield Royston and Kelshall Sports Association were delighted to have an official opening day on Sunday 9th July.

All local councillors were invited, including from NHC, who had given a very generous grant of £50,000 towards the project. A brief speech by TRAKSA and Royston Cricket Club chair, David May, thanked the various councils and the members of the affiliated sports clubs for their help with funding the project and then thanked the local professional tradesmen who gave their time and experience free of charge. He also thanked the small team of volunteers who had carried out the whole of the fundraising, administration, project management and construction of the project.

Mr May then asked Courtney and Jasmine to cut the ribbon to declare the building officially open.

Project Manager, Nigel Reader, said ‘I am delighted to have completed this project on time and on budget. Courtney, who lives in the village, was the biggest inspiration for me to push to complete this project and ensure that the building includes access and facilities for wheelchair users.’

The facility includes two refurbished changing rooms with separate WCs and showers, which have a movable partition wall to create a 40 square metre open space for different functions and uses. The extension contains a food preparation area, WC, additional changing room and disabled toilet facility with baby changing.

Soon there will be a defibrillator on site for use by formal users of the pavilion and recreation ground and there are plans to complete the refurbishment of the facilities with new car-park surfacing, upgrades to the existing storage sheds and installation of a rainwater harvesting system as soon as funding can be identified and secured.
