WANTED: A jovial individual with a loud voice to fill the boots of Royston’s Town Crier who is retiring after more than twenty years opening fayres and markets, announcing events and introducing dignitaries. Not to mention the real purpose of a Town Crier which is to read out Royal Proclamations.
There’s a nice red uniform, a 200-year old bell and an annual honorarium. What more can anyone want?

TOWN CRIER FOR ROYSTON TOWN COUNCIL
Role & Duties
The role of Town Crier for Royston is a position that serves an important function both in terms of promoting the town and its heritage.
- The post holder will be expected to attend all major civic events in the town as agreed in advance with the Mayor’s secretary.
- The post holder must write a relevant cry for each significant event that they are asked to attend. All cries should be up to 125 words long, commence with the words ‘Oyez, Oyez, Oyez’ and end with the words ‘God Save the King’. All cries must be non-political, non-religious and in good taste with no inappropriate language.
- The post holder will receive some financial assistance by way of an honorarium of £400 per annum.
- The post is strictly non-political and the post holder must not make statements (cries) of a political nature nor attend political events.
- The post holder must have a good knowledge of the town and its history or be prepared to learn about the town.
The application process:
- To apply, please submit a letter to Royston Town Council by 30th November 2024 explaining why you feel you would be suitable for the role of Town Crier.
- Shortlisted applicants will be invited to meet with the Mayor, Town Clerk and the current Town Crier in December and will then be invited to perform in a nearby public location a ‘cry’ that they have written on a topic of their choosing.
- The appointment of the chosen candidate to the role of Town Crier will be presented to a meeting of the Town Council in January for ratification.
