On Tuesday 7th March 2023, children from Tannery Drift First School planted two cherry trees gifted by the Queen’s Green Canopy initiative, to mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. Although the scheme was due to finish at the end of the Jubilee Year in December, it was extended by King Charles until March, the end of the tree planting season, to give more people the opportunity to plant a tree to honour Her Majesty the Queen.
The trees can be seen on the Queen’s Green Canopy interactive map at QueensGreenCanopy.org
Children from Tannery Drift have already planted a variety of trees as part of similar schemes. These include more than 30 donated by the Woodland Trust. In 2012, they were given an acorn from the Royal Parks to mark the Queen’s Golden Jubilee. This oak tree is now growing well in the wildlife area of the school. Tannery Drift places an emphasis on outdoor learning. Mrs Greetham, Headteacher, said, “Children have access to lots of high-quality play spaces, a wildlife area, allotments and tennis courts. Providing the right environment in which children can learn is what I believe helps children to thrive.”
