Introducing, Thomas Huttlestone, a local singer and trumpet player. Originally from Essex, Thomas moved to Chrishall in 2018, before moving to Royston a couple of years later, where he began working and eventually singing in the local area. He loves putting on shows and performing at local venues.
Tell us about Tom Huttlestone Music and the inspiration behind the idea
Music has always been a part of my life. I grew up listening to big bands as my dad is a trumpet player and also did musical theatre shows thanks to my mum’s acting background. This progressed into West End shows. After 2020/2021, I decided to stop studying and put more effort into singing. This has developed over the last few years into what is now my career, where I perform shows, weddings, functions and other events, many of which I have done for Royston residents.
What is your favourite venue or event in the local area to perform at, and why?
I’m looking forward to performing at Royston Town Hall this November, as it’s a great way to get people using one of the larger local venues. I do perform at various venues around Royston though including the Jolly Postie which always has a good crowd, Royston Golf Club and local villages. The Christmas lights switch-on was amazing last year and I will also be perfoming at the event on Friday 29th November this year too!
What makes the Royston business community unique, in your opinion?
So many business owners around the town have a great love of Royston and also show great interest in other businesses thriving. As someone who lives in Royston, I see many of these business owners often around the town and many are often promoting the other business and events in their own shops. Having events like the Royston First Business Awards is a great way of keeping the independent businesses thriving in what is a difficult environment for small businesses generally.
How do you like to spend your free time when you’re not working?
I spend my free time occasionally playing golf or catching up on the latest Netflix docuseries! Have currently been following the Menendez brothers case in the US as well as learning about the Nazi trials after WW2!
I also occasionally go for walks around local villages. Most free evenings I have are spent rehearsing with brass bands, big bands or preparing for my upcoming events.
What’s your proudest accomplishment, either personally or professionally?
Performing as Oliver in Theatre Royal Drury Lane, London as a child.
What’s the most memorable feedback you’ve received from a local fan?
There are many comments I could choose from but I’d say one I’ve had quite a few times is when someone has walked past and said “I thought that was a CD playing” which always makes me laugh.
What advice would you give to someone new to the area or visiting for the first time?
If you’ve recently moved to the area, visit your local businesess, even if it’s just to see what they do. It’s always handy knowing what the local suppliers do and where they are based to save uneccessary trips to Cambridge or Stevenage. You can get most essentials from the town.
For those who are visiting, have a look to see what events are on at some of the local venues. Places like the Jolly Postie put on live music nights where you can also have a decent meal out. There are a lot of good restaurants around the town offering a variety of different food options.
During the day, I’d definitely recommend a walk over the Heath and through the woods. You get some amazing views up there but watch out for golfers, especially if I’m on the tee!
What upcoming projects or performances should we keep an eye out for?
My upcoming show on November 2nd which has sold out is on at the town hall and will be a good night! If you have missed this, don’t worry as I am looking to put on more live events next year. I am also perfoming at some local venues, including the Jolly Postie on 29th November which is straight after the Christmas lights switch on in the centre of Royston that same evening!
Finally, What inspirational quote sums you up?
As Sinatra sang, “The record shows, I took the blows and did it My Way.” I love singing this song and it really motivates me to make the most out of what I can do. I’ve tried and failed at so many things and I’ve found a passion in performing music. A few years ago I never thought I’d be doing this for a living and now I’m here, I realise that none of the failures really mattered. As long as I have lived life my way and made the most of the oppurtunities I get, that’s all that matters.
