My Local Life: Ben Chapman

Give someone 20 minutes to talk about their life and you never know what you might discover! This month, local businessman Ben Chapman.

Ben grew up in Ashwell, moved to London after University and has spent over 25 years in the licensing trade running some flagship restaurants and bars in the Westend and City before moving to Royston to run the oldest of Royston’s hostelries, The Old Bull Inn.

Where do you live?
I now live in Letchworth, where the kids go to school.

What do you love about your work?
I really enjoy delivering great customer service and being blessed to be part of Royston life. Hosting Hartbeeps and the NCT groups for young babies and children, the Royston Folk Club, the Royston Business Breakfast Club, the 4N Business Breakfast Club, and most recently Make Lunch Royston,to name but a few!

Your favourite local shop?
‘Carlos hairdressers’ – they have a great team and are down the end of our drive at The Old Bull, on the Market square

The last book you read?
‘On the road’, Jack Kerouac, which I re-read after finding it on our shelves.

What is your proudest moment?
The birth of my 3 children.

What is your greatest fear?
Being caught in an avalanche.

What’s your favourite local place to eat?
I am good friends with Ivan and I do like ‘The Fox and Duck’ in Therfield, which he runs
What is your favourite film?
Heat, with Robert DeNiro and Al Pacino.

What is your most valued possession?
It would have to the watch my wife bought me for my 40th, I am never without it!

What is your guilty pleasure?
I do like a nice red wine… only at weekends… well, maybe from Thursday night onwards.

Best thing that has happened to you recently?
Our trip to the French Alps with my family, lovely weather, lovely food.
