Monthly Update – Royston Vets: Acute & Chronic Pain in Pets

Pain can be present in many forms, not just movement. Dogs and cats tend to hide their pain and often only show subtle and physical behaviour signs. This makes it difficult for you to notice that they are suffering, potentially prolonging their discomfort.

Acute pain is sudden and typically lasts for a short time, usually caused by trauma or injury. Chronic refers to pain that lasts for an extended period. This type of pain can be associated with various conditions such as osteoarthritis, cancer or dental disease.

Here are just a few signs to look out for: agitation, panting, changes in movement, hiding, decrease in activity, loss of appetite.

If you notice any of these signs, it is important to seek advice to determine the underlying cause of pain and develop an appropriate treatment plan.
