I heard the expression “It takes a village” at least three times last week.
Funny how certain phrases pop up just when you need them. I had taken some time off to recover from an operation, and being forced to slow down gave me space to reflect. What stood out most was how much I relied on others during that time – friends checking in, family supporting me, even kind words from acquaintances. It reminded me how interconnected we all are.
“It takes a village to raise a child” is a powerful truth, but it doesn’t just apply to kids – it applies to all of us. We don’t grow, heal, or thrive alone. Whether it’s through the encouragement of a friend, the wisdom of a mentor, or the kindness of a stranger, community shapes us. We rise together, not apart.
I feel the same way about yoga.
The word yoga comes from the Sanskrit root yuj, meaning “to unite.” It’s more than just stretching or breathing – it’s about connection, both within ourselves and with others. When we practice yoga, whether in a studio or at home, we tap into something bigger than us. There’s an energy, a sense of belonging, a reminder that we are never truly alone.
Stepping back for a moment, whether through recovery, reflection or simply rolling out a yoga mat, has made me realise one thing: life isn’t meant to be done solo. We are each other’s village, and that’s a beautiful thing.
