Melbourn Fete Committee Family Fun Day Report – Saturday 24th June 2023

It’s been five years, but we’re back! What was supposed to be a small relaunch event became something a bit bigger, and Melbourn Fete Committee was proud to welcome an estimated 3,000 visitors to a Family Fun Day on the Moor. The weather was with us, and the ice cream van did a roaring trade as the sun beat down.

There was a little something for everyone, with bouncy castles, soft archery, classic vehicles, traction engines, stationary engines, steam engine and train rides, science projects, and a children’s art competition.

Not content with that, there was also a ‘food court of deliciousness’ supporting local vendors, a wide range of stalls from local groups and businesses, and live music from local groups (you might sense a theme here…).

To round it off, we had a visit from two unicorns which stole the show, and of course, no Melbourn Fete event would be complete without the egg throwing competition… I won’t stoop to egg puns, but suffice to say that egg-spectations were high as the competition went on. Some egg-streme measures were taken by a couple of competitors, but in the end the victorious pair proved impossible to beat. I said I wouldn’t stoop to egg puns, didn’t I? Egg-nore me…

Returning to more serious matters, Chairperson of the Melbourn Fete Committee, Gillian Morland, commented on the day, “It’s amazing what can be done when a community pulls together, and we are so pleased that everyone had a good time.”

A huge thank you, therefore, to our many generous sponsors for making it possible to have free entry, and for subsidising so many of the attractions. Many families appreciated this, especially in the midst of a cost-of-living crisis. An equally huge thank you to the volunteers who helped set up, marshal and clear up – we couldn’t have done it without you!

Finally, the committee would like to thank everyone who came along and supported the event. We look forward to donating profits from the day to local good causes and planning our next event. See you there!
