Friends of Therfield Heath: Royston Wildlife Group – Swifts Nesting Boxes

Do you remember the sound of large flocks of Swifts screaming through the streets of Royston and over Therfield Heath?

Do you miss them now that their numbers have dwindled alarmingly? They are estimated to have fallen by more than 60% in 25 years. One of the main reasons for this is thought to be loss of nesting sites as older buildings have been demolished or gaps suitable for nests closed up during modernisation. It has now been shown that putting up nest boxes does increase Swift populations.

The Friends of Therfield Heath and Greens are starting a campaign to install Swift boxes on private houses and public buildings in Royston and nearby villages. Swifts, unlike their cousins Swallows and Martins, do not make a mess, dropping their pellets away from the nest. They also carry the droppings of their young away from the nest so no maintenance is required. Boxes can be supplied and fitted from less than £40 each.
