Community News: Royston Radio Update

After our Royston Radio official launch on 1st May at the town’s May Fayre, the team have been busy supporting local businesses, community projects and education.

With support from Ensum Brown, we have been able to donate an Alexa to Richard Cox House and the Royston Fire Station crew for their enjoyment. We have one more smart speaker to donate to a worthy community group so if you would like to benefit from a smart speaker please get in touch with the team at info@roystonradio.com

We welcomed a student from MVC for work experience week. It was great to see her confidence grow as the week progressed. We look forward to welcoming more students in the future so please get in touch if you think your school would like to come for a visit.

The team have also met with the newly elected Mayor, Councillor Lisa Adams and she has recorded an introduction message for all the residents of Royston and the surrounding areas.

We sponsored a free event for the over 65’s called ‘Memory Lane’ at Royston Town Council which took place on Weds 9th August. There were approx. 70 people in attendance who enjoyed music, chatting about their memories and enjoying a cream tea.

Our Director, Fonz Chamberlain made his comeback to radio on August 27th with his show ‘Vinyl Rewind.’ Catch Fonz every Sunday at 10am.

We have taken delivery of brand new banners promoting the station. One has just gone up at Tesco. We also have a banner outside Royston Fire Station.

We have a new Mascot – Baxter the RR dog. His name was chosen by Henry who attended the Royston Fire Station Open Day. Baxter has been very busy at events mainly parachuting from great heights!

The crew from Royston Fire Station are recording monthly safety advice for the local community with the first of these to be broadcast later this month.

We would like to give a big shout out to The Royston Fire Station crew and the Royston Rotary Club who have supported us with equipment at our events this summer.

We have some very exciting news for the station….. Royston Radio now has its very own App which has just been launched on App stores.

We recorded live music at a 3-day event held at The Dolphin pub in Melbourn. We will also be helping them raise funds for Melbourn church bells with one of their workers doing a sponsored skydive to raise money for MacMillan Cancer Support.

We held a Retro Fayre at Coombes Community Centre on 2nd September and had a great response from the community some of whom generously gave donations to the station.

Our new kids on the block are Peter Ross with his show ‘My Time Capsule’ which is broadcast on a Sunday at 11am and ‘Swampy’ aka John Rees on a Monday at 9pm with his show ‘The Mardi Gras Hour’

We also have an inspirational young lady, Alice Randell, who is completely paralysed. She has started ‘The Fun Show’ with help from her mum which is broadcast every Friday at 1pm.

We also have a new afternoon drama show every Wednesday at 2pm.

We are looking forward to being part of the Royston Arts Festival in September where we run FREE Radio workshops. We have also been invited to attend ‘Gala in the Gardens’ as part of the Royston Arts Festival. This will take place on Saturday 20th September from 12 – 5pm in Priory Memorial Gardens and is a fun day out for all the family.
