Royston Town Council Celebrates the Retirement of Councillor Michael Harrison After 32 Years of Dedicated Service

Royston Town Council recently hosted a special retirement event to honour Councillor Michael Harrison as he steps down after an extraordinary 32 years of service to the town and its residents.

The event, organised by the Chief Officer on behalf of Royston Town Council, brought together councillors, colleagues, friends, and members of the community to recognise and celebrate Councillor Harrison’s remarkable contribution to public life.

During the evening, the Mayor paid tribute to Councillor Harrison’s unwavering dedication, commitment, and genuine care for Royston throughout more than three decades of service.

Councillor Harrison has served not only as a Town Councillor, but also in the significant civic roles of both Mayor and Deputy Mayor, demonstrating strong leadership, diplomacy, and a deep understanding of the needs of the community.

Over the years, he played a key role in shaping the future of Royston, including campaigning for the bypass extension between the A505 and the A10—an issue of major importance for local residents, businesses, and the town’s continued development. He was also instrumental in supporting Royston’s development as a sustainable travel hub, helping improve connectivity and promote greener transport options for future generations.

His service extended across a number of vital council committees, including finance, planning, and highways, where his practical thinking, calm judgement, and attention to detail proved invaluable. In addition, Councillor Harrison served on the committee of the Leet Charity, continuing his support for local people and charitable causes beyond his formal council duties.

Many residents will also fondly remember his much-loved quiz nights, which not only brought the community together but also helped raise significant funds for local good causes over the years.

As part of the evening’s presentations, Councillor Harrison and Mrs Harrison were presented with gifts as tokens of appreciation for their years of service and support. In a lasting tribute to his outstanding contribution, the Council also unanimously agreed to rename Room 11 within the Council offices as “The Harrison Room.”

Speaking at the event, the Mayor said:

“It is fitting that your name will remain part of this building, just as your work and commitment will remain part of Royston for many years to come. On behalf of everyone here, and on behalf of the people of Royston, thank you for your 32 years of dedicated service, your leadership, your hard work, and your friendship.”

As Councillor Harrison begins his well-earned retirement, Royston Town Council extends its sincere gratitude and best wishes for the future—including more time to enjoy his favourite hobby of building his model railway.

His legacy of service, leadership, and community spirit will remain an important part of Royston for many years to come.
