Be Sustainable in March

At last, spring is blooming and the days are longer. March brings so many opportunities to take part in environmental activities. 

Here are just a few:  

World Wildlife Day – 3rd March 2024
World Wildlife Day is a global event, held every year on 3rd March, to celebrate and raise awareness of the world’s wild animals and plants.

The Big Plastic Count from 11th to 17th March 2024 is the UK’s biggest plastic audit. Thousands of schools, households, community groups and businesses across the UK come together to count their plastic waste and submit the results on the website. Apply for a digital or postal pack today!

The Big Walk & Wheel from 11th to 22nd March 2024 is the UK’s largest inter-school walking, wheeling, scooting and cycling challenge. It aims to inspire thousands of pupils to get active during the school run giving everyone a healthy start to the day as well as reducing our carbon footprint.

Sustrans Big Walk & Wheel 11th to 22nd March 2024
Formerly known as The Big Pedal, The Big Walk & Wheel is the UK’s largest inter-school walking, wheeling, scooting and cycling challenge. It aims to inspire hundreds of thousands of pupils to get active during the school run.

This year’s Great British Spring Clean runs from 15th to 31st March 2024. Look out for organised local litter picks or just take a small bag and pair of gloves on your daily walks to collect bits of rubbish as you go www.keepbritaintidy.org

Global Recycling Day – 18th March 2024
Global Recycling Day is an environmental awareness day that was created in 2018 by the Global Recycling Foundation.

Trees Are The Key Awareness Week from 18th to 24th March 2024 seeks to raise awareness of the many health benefits of trees. Particularly how planting more trees can help to tackle climate change. From our back garden to the tropics more trees mean less CO2!

International Day of Forests – 21st March 2024
International Day of Forests is a worldwide event that celebrates and raises awareness of the importance of all types of forests.

World Water Day – 22nd March 2024
Held on 22nd March every year since 1993, World Water Day celebrates the life-sustaining role of fresh water and also raises awareness of the 2 billion people across the globe living without access to safe water.

Earth Hour www.earthhour.org Switch off everything for an hour on Saturday, March 23rd at 8.30 pm. Find ingenious ways to entertain yourselves by candlelight (or lamps) with games, puzzles or a good book. Perhaps roast marshmallows over a firepit and celebrate a little less light pollution.

Finally, in between saving the world let’s not forget about our hedgehogs! Enjoy a busy and beautiful Spring!
