Be Sustainable in March

There is so much to look forward to in the spring! Those hedgehogs will be up and about and, having lost a third of their body weight over winter, please do leave dog food and water out for them.

Food Waste Action Week is Monday, 6th to Sunday 12th March 2023. Last year, in the UK alone, over 4 million people took action to reduce the amount of food they throw away at home. This year will focus on how valuable food is in our lives, how it brings people together and how using up every scrap we buy saves money, time and ultimately our planet. Be confident about using leftovers! There are days of difference between Best Before dates and Use By dates. Try making a weekly menu plan and not buy more than you really need. Special offers only work if you really do have the space to store them correctly. Be creative with leftovers!

This year’s Great British Spring Clean runs from Friday, 17th March to 2nd April 2023. Take part in organised local litter picks or just take a bag and gloves on your walks to collect bits of rubbish as you go.

To celebrate the longer days join in Earth Hour on 25th March 2023. Switch off the electricity from 8.30pm and spend 60 minutes by candlelight playing board games, making music or telling ghost stories!

In the garden spring onions are a great early vegetable to plant in March, as well as spinach, peas, shallots and parsnips. (Make sure you have some good organic mulch for the spinach!)

Have a bright and beautiful Spring!
