Be Sustainable in August by Royston Environmental Group…

Thursday, 1st August is Cycle to Work Day – 25 years young it was originally introduced in 1999, aimed to encourage healthier commuting and reduce environmental pollution. Cycling, like any exercise, promotes good physical and mental health, releasing all that wonderful dopamine!

National Allotments Week falls from the 12th to 18th August this year – Look out for open days at the Royston Community Garden, which fall on Tuesday mornings for most of the summer holidays. (You drive past it every time you visit Tesco Extra.) Visit the garden to help with a little light work and see how the flowers and veggies are growing.

Here’s an unusual date for your diary: World Plant Milk Day is on 22nd August 2024. Try swapping your usual dairy milk for one of the many plant milks easily available. Barista style oat milk is a very good alternative to dairy and sustainably produced. Not all plant milks are sustainable and it’s worth considering those air miles when making your choice.

When you’re planning a grand day out please do consider a Plastic Free Picnic as part of your outing. Eliminating single use plastics is one of the simplest things we can do to help our environment. Wrap homemade jam sandwiches and pastries in paper snack bags and use washable food containers for salads, nuts and berries. Insulated water bottles are not only reusable (and not made from plastic) but will also keep drinks cool on warm days.

I always ask at this time of year, but while you’re out and about please pick up some litter here and there. People do seem to be more conscientious these days and it does help a lot. Keep a small bag handy and dispose of it carefully. Report larger amounts of casually dumped waste to: www.fixmystreet.com
