Community News: Banyers House or Chalk Hare – You Decide!

We announced that we’d like to change the name of the historic building ‘Banyers House’ to ‘the Chalk Hare’ earlier this week. Our goal was to honour the heritage of the building but look to the future, we wanted to capture the energy and spirit of the vibrant, social pub we want to be for you today.

Why “The Chalk Hare”?

We wanted a name that felt truly “Royston”—something that belonged to the land as much as the people.

The Chalk: Our town is built on unique chalk bedrock, famous for the mysterious Royston Cave and the beautiful Therfield Heath.

The Hare: A symbol of the wild, resilient wildlife that thrives on our chalk grasslands. Hares have long been a part of the local landscape and folklore.

So that was our thinking process. We wanted a new name to signify a ‘new start’ and one that conjured up thoughts of a welcoming pub set in a region of beautiful countryside.

The last thing we wanted to do was upset the community we sit within. But having made the announcement, there was a huge surge of responses and we could feel the passion that everyone has for this wonderful old building. So of course, we will take everyones thoughts into consideration.

We’ve devised a very simple poll on the link below; Change the name to ‘Chalk Hare’ or retain the name of ‘Banyers House’.

We’ll keep the poll open until noon on Friday 30th January. We’d really appreciate your vote and we will share the results and act accordingly! Thank you.

We would also love to hear from anyone who has a link to the history of the building as we have a real passion to find out as much as we can about its history.’’
