Duchess of Sutherland Steams through Cambridgeshire…
Heading for Windsor and Eton the famous locomotive, the ‘Duchess of Sunderland’, is captured on camera powering through Meldreth station on a journey that started at Norwich earlier on Saturday morning. The engine was one of a number of 4-6-2 class Pacifics designed by the very ingenious and talented William Stanier for the London Midland and Scottish Railway in 1938. Withdrawn from passenger service in 1964, the Duchess was originally sold to Butlins Holiday camp in Scotland. But in 1996 it was acquired by the Princess Royal Loco Trust, which set about restoring the engine back to its original greatness.
